Saturday Night Cotillion

Last night, after we returned home from dinner at the Cheesecake Factory, I had another hot date with the September Studio Calico kit, "Cotillion." I love the colors in this kit -- they're so "me", which is probably why I ended up creating two "me" pages:

Creating pages for me is so different from creating pages for design teams. I'm not sure why. I guess that worries about quality, deadlines, and the use of certain products are absent from the process. I still love the design work that I do, don't get me wrong, but there's something so freeing about creating just for the heck of it, about following impulses and mixing different products and just going with the flow.

Five Faves Friday

1.
Z has been wanting to watch Fame for months now, and today the movie finally premiered. I didn't have very high hopes for it, so I wasn't all that surprised by the presence of mediocre talent, undeveloped characters, and many songs that went "clunk". The movie did have its moments, though. Everyone loves a spectacle, right? There was a definite highlight: Asher Book. The boy can SING! Plus, he's pretty. And his last name is Book. I think Z is smitten.

Sadly, rather than creating music like that which he sang in the movie, he has been directing his talents at coordinating NKOTB and Backstreet Boy-inspired dance moves and singing formulaic lyrics with the V Factory, a boy band of which he is, tragically, a member. Hopefully someone will have an intervention and give the boy a piano and a solo album. He also could use some writing lessons, as evidenced by his MySpace page: "what up my name is asher. nickname ashthecash. but dont hate haha." Come on, man -- your last name is Book, for freak's sake. How did this guy even make it onto the Five Faves? His voice. Oh, his voice.

2.
After the movie this evening, Z and I stopped at Borders for a bit of a looksee, and I discovered three new editions of Pride and Prejudice, The Scarlet Letter, and Wuthering Heights, with covers designed by artist Ruben Toledo.

Even though I have older editions of these books, I almost bought these three just to have Toledo's brilliant covers in my possession.

3.
Harper Simon. Oh, Harper Simon. I could surround myself with his songs all day long.

4.
One of my favorite things about today was seeing this post at Collage Press. It's bittersweet, actually. It includes the first layout that I've done about my mom's wedding, but it's also my last layout for the Collage Press design team.
One of my favorite things about this year has been serving as a member of the team. Alas, now that we are in the last month of our one-year term, it is time to pass the torch to the next lucky group of designers.

5.
The NEW New Moon trailer has most definitely earned a spot on the Five Faves this week.

Happy.

Happy that she's feeling better.
Since Wednesday, she's been dealing with a fever that comes and goes.
After two doctor's visits
and a whole lot of worrying,
she's finally feeling better.

Happy that a box arrived today
with this
much-coveted
long-awaited
GREEN (green, I say!)
and STRIPED (striped, I say!)
Anthro dress.
It's even prettier in person.
The white is actually more of a cream.
It's love-love-loverly.
Happy to be a couch potato
with a purpose again.
It's premiere time!
So far, I'm loving The Big Bang Theory.
Still crushing on Sheldon BIG time.
Even with his facial hair.
Gossip Girl is o-kay (not as strong as past episodes),
and I'm liking Glee (though it's a little uneven at times...but it'll find its way).
Last Friday's episode of Psych was brilliant. Brill i ant.
The first five minutes of The Office still have me laughing almost a week later.
Up ahead: I can't wait to see Lie to Me and Grey's.
Geesh, I watch a lot of TV. Thank goodness for my DVR.

Happy to be able to play with paper again.
Sick child = worried mama.
Not exactly scrap-happy conditions.
When the fever finally started to drop,
and the helicopter mother impulses started to wane,
I finally found myself able to obsess about something other than
thermometers and WebMD again.

Here's a layout I created with the Lily Bee Audrey line, about my (sainted) sister-in-law Cheryl.

There's still a chance to win
the ENTIRE Audrey line, if'n you're interested.
Check out the details on the Lily Bee blog.

Ugh.

We're taking some time off today to be sick.
Hopefully next week I'll resume Five Faves Friday.
Take care and have a great weekend!

Five Faves Friday, in Fragments

One week.
Busy days.
Late nights.
A few eye-rolling moments.
Still, many bright spots.

Some highlights:

1-3.
Sale.
Anthropologie.
Yesterday.

4.
Gossip Girl, Season 2.
Seven episodes to go.
Can't get enough.

5.
This poem:

Welcome Morning

There is joy

is all:

in the hair I brush each morning,

in the Cannon towel, newly washed,

that I rub my body with each morning,

in the chapel of eggs I cook

each morning,

in the outcry of the kettle

that heats my coffee

each morning,

in the spoon and the chair

that cry “hello there, Anne”

each morning,

in the godhead of the table

that I set my silver, plate, cup upon

each morning.

All this is God,

right here in my pea-green house

each morning

and I mean,

though often forget,

to give thanks,

to faint down by the kitchen table

in a prayer of rejoicing

as the holy birds at the kitchen window

peck into their marriage of seeds.

So while I think of it,

let me paint a thank-you on my palm

for this God, this laughter of the morning,

lest it go unspoken.

The Joy that isn’t shared, I’ve heard,

dies young.
