In Transition


Apologies
to those of who you have been checking in and finding nothing new.
Hopefully
as the school year comes to an end
and the
s
t
r
e
s
s
of all of life's ch-ch-changes
dissipates,
I'll be myself again --
or at least,
a slightly haggard
version of that self,
but myself nonetheless.

I have been looking into schedules.... How we spend our days is, of course, how we spend our lives. What we do with this hour, and that one, is what we are doing. A schedule defends from chaos and whim. It is a net for catching days. It is a scaffolding on which a worker can stand and labor with both hands at sections of time. A schedule is a mock-up of reason and order -- willed, faked, and so brought into being; it is a peace and a haven set into the wreck of time; it is a lifeboat on which you find yourself, decades later, still living. Each day is the same, so you remember the series afterward as a blurred and powerful pattern.


There is no shortage of good days. It is good lives that are hard to come by. A life of good days lived in the senses is not enough. The life of sensation is the life of greed; it requires more and more. The life of the spirit requires less and less; time is ample and its passage sweet. Who would call a day spent reading a good day? But a life spent reading -- that is a good life. A day that closely resembles every other day of the past ten or twenty years does not suggest itself as a good one.

The Mother of All Celebrations

Around here, we kick back on Mother's Day
and do the actual celebrating one day ahead,
in order to beat the crowds.

Dear, sweet Rob
and the child who makes the whole
Mother's Day thing possible
made reservations at Kincaid's tonight.
Clearly, they love me.
We don't eat there often -- only on special occasions.
The food is somewhat pricey, but oh, is it incredible.

There's the crab dip...
and the teriyaki tenderloin appetizer...
and the creamy Caesar salad...
and amazing fresh fish
(furikake ahi with chili aioli)...
not to mention the delectable filet mignon that Rob had tonight.
Of course, there is nothing quite like sharing an amazing meal
with the ones you love...
to include the sharing
of the best dessert in the world-- creme brulee.
Of course, we observed our usual "coffee dance."
Watching the cream and sugar swirl together
is a total mind trip.
Psychedelic.
After a game of sugar packet trivia
and an hour or so
of wandering through Borders,
we called it a night.

It was SO worth the 36 hours of labor
to be able to celebrate this way.

Ain't No Party Like My Nana's Tea Party


This has to be
one of my favorite Flight of the Conchords lines ever.

It also happens to be true:

Yep, my grandmother is ninety years young,
and beautiful and spirited as ever.
We should all be so lucky and so blessed.
She says that she still feels sixteen on the inside,
and the older I get, the more I know what she's talking about.

It totally reminds me of the story "Eleven", by Sandra Cisneros:

What they don't understand about birthdays and what they never tell you is that when you're eleven, you're also ten, and nine, and eight, and seven, and six, and five, and four, and three, and two, and one. And when you wake up on your eleventh birthday you expect to feel eleven, but you don't. You open your eyes and everything's just like yesterday, only it's today. And you don't feel eleven at all. You feel like you're still ten. And you are -- underneath the year that makes you eleven.

Underneath those ninety years, sixteen is there,

wide-eyed and wondering,

what's next?
