It's On. (-ish)

It's that time of year again...
"Other kids' games are all such a bore!
They've gotta have rules and they gotta keep score!
Calvinball is better by far!
It's never the same!
It's always bizarre!
You don't need a team or a referee!
You know that it's great, 'cause it's named after me!"
- Calvin, from Calvin and Hobbes

Yep, it's time for Calvinball!

Throughout the month of March, brave scrappers steel themselves for the boldest and messiest and most random and delightful challenge of the year, competing for the glory of being declared the winner of Calvinball (or the honor of surviving it).

Here are the rules, as per Calvinball veteran Doris Sander, via the Jenni Bowlin Studio Mercantile Forum
1. The rules are subject to change at any time by anyone.
2. Layouts = 1 point.
3. The layout is the gold standard. All other projects are measured against the almighty layout.
4. Smack talking is expected.
5. Cheering on your teammates is also expected.
6. The reward is the huge feeling of accomplishment at the end of the month!
There's another reward, actually -- being entered in a drawing for a $25 gift certificate to Jenni Bowlin Studios.  Niiice.

Two years ago, I earned 17 points total; last year, I earned 74.  I'm hoping to do better than that this year, but I do have turtle-like tendencies when it comes to crossing the Calvinball finish line. Slow and steady win the race? Not in this case. Regardless, I'm willing to give it a go -- Calvinball is always so much fun! As Calvin claims, it's really not about keeping score, and the rules are most definitely open to interpretation and contestation.  Game on!

Readysetgo.

Gardeners' Digest: February Garden Girl Blog Hop

Welcome to the Gardeners' Digest, a monthly update from the Garden Girls, the design team at Two Peas in a Bucket.  We'd love it if you'd visit each of our blogs today to see what's in bloom in the Garden this month.
If you've seen the March gallery teaser, then you're already in the loop about the upcoming Garden theme: shapes and die-cuts! Here's a peek at my layout:
What truly inspires me are people who are unafraid to take on challenges, and what's more, to do so creatively. I recently read an article called "Fundamentals of Creativity" that defines creativity in terms of fulfilling the requirements of a task while also being original and innovative. That sounds rather clinical, I know, but it makes sense to me. In last week's "Love, Love, Love" Scrap Your Stash video, I put forth the challenge to use envelopes on a layout and/or scrap your philosophy of love.  This "Inspired By" shout-out is for those peas who not only accomplished the task, but who also took on the challenge creatively! Here are a few of the submissions:
L-R: "Pieces of Me"(by KatyLouWho), "God Gave Me You" (TexasChic), "Love" (by Aimmer)

Since CHA, the forum at Two Peas has been filled with threads of yearning and desperation -- When is Dear Lizzy Lucky Charm going to be released? When is the new Amy Tangerine going to be in the store? Will I ever smell a fresh new piece of patterned paper again?  Oh, I know those threads well...especially since I contributed my passionate paper ponderings to a few.

And now, at long last, the waiting is over! The past few days have seen the Two Peas store flooded with over 600 new products. Best. Deluge. Ever. Here are some of my favorites from the lot:
(1) Jenni Bowlin Studio Paper Tapes.  I had to take a photo of these lovelies, just so that you can see the wonder that is the Bleached Woodgrain, the brightness of the Notebook Grid tape, and the subtlety of the Sideways Chevron tape.
(2) "Remember This" 12 x 12 Maggie Holmes Paper by Crate Paper. Both sides of this paper have stolen my heart. You'll notice this paper in my upcoming Garden layout:
(3) Maggie Holmes Mini Album Collection by Crate Paper.  The vellum packet of sequins and the striped envelope are my favorites!
(4) Studio Calico Wood Veneer Shapes.  I foresee many pet pages in my future!
(5) Dear Lizzy Lucky Charm Collection.  I love this collection even more than 5th and Frolic, if that is possible. The combination of pastels, brights, and navy is amazing, and don't even get me started on these patterns.
To thank you for stopping by today, I would love to offer you a chance to win a spot in Wilna Furstenberg's new Two Peas workshop, Art Class
If you're interested in winning a free spot in Wilna's workshop (a $25.00 value), leave a comment on this post (including your Two Peas username) before 6:00 p.m. Hawaii time on Tuesday, February 26, and I will select one lucky winner. If you purchase access to the class and end up winning the drawing, the fee will be refunded, or you can "regift" the free class access to a friend.  Good luck! I know the class will be incredible.

In fact, the amazingly talented Ms. Furstenberg is your next stop. You can also start from the beginning of the hop by going to the Two Peas in a Bucket blog. Happy hopping!

Self-Control? What's That?

So I just happened upon Two Peas for my nightly gander through the forums and gallery, when what did I see but a thread mentioning new stuff in the store? Sure enough, all of the items on my CHA wish list are now available!

Nine minutes later? My cart is packed.
Ten minutes later?  It's empty.

Here's a peek at what's heading my way:

New Amy Tangerine...
"Share" 12 x 12 Yes, Please paper by Amy Tangerine
"Life" Yes, Please Amy Tangerine Stickers
New Dear Lizzy...
"Lucky Coin" Dear Lizzy Lucky Charm patterned paper
"Falling Star" Dear Lizzy Lucky Charm patterned paper
New Studio Calico...
"Charlotte" Studio Calico Here & There Paper
Studio Calico Here & There Chevron Spray Mask
New Crate Paper...
"Cupcakes" 12 x 12 Party Day Paper from Crate Paper
"Click" 12 x 12 Maggie Holmes Paper from Crate Paper
I may lack self-control, but I do not lack for pretty paper.

Am (Not)

I am
NOT doing the dishes
NOT washing the car (or the dog)
NOT folding the laundry
NOT getting a haircut
NOT cleaning the litter box
NOT going through junk mail
NOT clearing out the fridge
(at least, not yet)
and I am
NOT caring
because
today I am taking the time to create
I am rubbing the belly of the dog who needs a bath
I am eating chocolate for breakfast
I am spending time with my family
I am enjoying the peace and the breeze and the birdsong
and I am
good with that.

Granted, we have to eat off of paper plates, with plastic forks,
but I'm cool with that.

Okay, maybe I should go do the dishes.

The Real Thing

Love is great. Love is grand.
But being able to laugh like a fool with the one you love?
That's the best.

I love seeing my mom laughing -- really laughing -- again.
For years, she was broken-hearted,
but she never gave up on the idea that God had a plan for her,
and she was right.

Today, she is married to a truly good man,
one who loves her just as she is,
and who makes her laugh like a lunatic.
Love transforms us.
It's a crazy, magical thing.
(For more details about the layout and the sketch on which it is based, check out this week's October Afternoon sketch challenge post.)

This Is the Sound of Hungry Women

Years ago, as a teenager, I saw a performance of Les Miserables. I wasn't sure if I would like it, and the music at the beginning seemed almost discordant, but by the end of the play, I was weeping openly and professing my love for Les Mis. Thus, several months ago, when I heard the first few notes of Anne Hathaway's quavering voice singing "I Dreamed a Dream" and realized that I was seeing a trailer for a film version of Les Miserables, I was ecstatic (even through my tears -- yes, I cried during the trailer).

Just before the movie's premiere, I watched a featurette that blew my mind -- I learned that the singing in the film had been recorded live. The actors did not lip-synch using a pre-recorded track, as is conventional for movie musicals.

Knowing this just compounded the emotional effect of the film for me. My daughter and I absolutely loved the movie, and just a week after we'd seen it, she coordinated a second showing, this time with a bunch of her friends, followed by lunch filled with comfort food, to assist in the recovery after such a cathartic experience.

Luckily, I had my camera on hand for the occasion:
I created this layout for the Jenni Bowlin Studio blog, featuring new stamps, journaling cards, and accents, as well as papers from the Modern Mercantile line (and these can all be found in this month's JBS Mercantile kits as well).
The journaling shares the impact of the film on these ladies:
A full description of my process can be found on the JBS blog.

Thanks for visiting! I'll have the cast of SNL sing you out on this lovely Sunday:

New Pebbles, Evalicious, Studio Calico, and Crate Paper! (Oh, My.)

The Two Peas in a Bucket store is featuring over 200 new products today! Shortly after I discovered that, my cart ended up with a similar amount of new product in it, somehow.  Here's what's heading my way soon -- I can't wait!
"Matty" Love You More Boy Paper from Pebbles.  Brights. Circles. Pebbles.  'Nuff said.
I Heart Banner Stamp from Evalicious. I'm so going to make a "love list" page, using this  repeatedly.
Here & There Cats & Dogs Clear Stamp from Studio Calico. Many a pet page featuring these will be in my future!
DIY Shop from Crate Paper.  Pretty much every single paper from this line was dispatched immediately to my cart, no hesitation.  Oh, I how love this line!

There are even more CHA releases heading to the Two Peas store -- I'm going to be in so much trouble. :)
